Austria is often associated, rightly, with winter sports, but there is so much more on offer. Its alpine areas are rugged and picturesque, but that’s far from being the whole story.

Laundry

Laundromats are becoming more expensive. Expect to pay about €7 for a load of 8kg and €4-5 for 30 minutes’ drying. Wash cards and card operation in general is becoming more widespread. Opening hours are typically M-Su 6-22. To find a local laundromat, search ‘SB Waschsalon’.

The largest Vienna chain is the 15 Green & Clean laundromats in and around the city. There is also one in Linz and one in Graz and new sites are planned. Instructions are posted in English and various machines allow 8-26kg washes, sometimes washing and drying in one cycle. Some branches include an ironing corner. Payment is by debit or credit card, phone app or by the chain’s own stored-value card. An app function is also available to control machines. An 8kg wash costs €7.10, powder €1.95, 30 minutes of drying at adjustable temperature €4.70 and a 10-minute dry cycle costs €2.40.
