The most beautiful cities in Austria

Welcome to one of Europe’s most beautiful countries. Austria’s landscapes, regions and townscapes provide almost the full range of European variety in the centre of the continent. Austria is often associated, rightly, with winter sports, but there is so much more on offer. Its alpine areas are rugged and picturesque, but that’s far from being the whole story.

Austria is a place of high culture, especially in music and Baroque architecture. Its palaces, churches and monasteries are recognised for their stunning frescoes and rich stucco ornament. The richest monasteries can be seen as palaces in themselves.

Much of Austria's cultural heritage derives from its central position in the Holy Roman and Austro-Hungarian empires, ruled by the Habsburgs for more than 600 years. This imperial tradition ruled the territories around it for most of the centuries from the medieval period to the 20th century. Austria even dominated Italy, from which it drew much inspiration, and was a powerful force in the Catholic church.

Vienna is the centre of this high culture, but there is much more to experience along the Danube and around the lakes in its mountainous regions. Austria has 12 UNESCO world-heritage sites, including the historic centres of Vienna, Graz and Salzburg and the landscapes of the Salzkammergut and Wachau regions.
